MAGAZINE:::::::::::: PARACHUTE

³How should the interface between cognition and consciousness, or between perception and mind, be called? This, our second issue devoted to theextra-human and cognitive spheres, explores such territory of thought, whichremains largely uncharted (see PARACHUTE 119 X human AI).What are the reasons for this contemporary turn towards the discovery ofphenomena related to being and the consciousness of the world? How is one tonegotiate a place or a territory for the self in this techno-bio invasion?How does the present experience of the world enrich the consciousness ofself, the consciousness of the other, and the world in which we exist? How,on the other hand, is one to struggle against the annihilation of the selfwhich this sensory and cognitive tidal wave occasionally imposes?² (exerpt from Chantal Pontbriand¹s editorial)

NEW MEDIAS:::::::::::LEKTROLAB

LEKTROLAB LIMITED : DE-MYSTIFYING CONTEMPORARY CULTURE

LEKTROLAB is a Media Art Company organized as a platform run by Emma Davidson and Paul B. Davis and based in London.

'We are successful in creating a progressive and non-critical learning environment and reverse negative gender stereotypes within our workshops often associated with electronic and audio arts.'

INFORMATION MESSAGE SENT BY rHIZOME.org :

> The Britain-based media arts collective, Lektrolab, is best known for> teaching how-to workshops on hacking Nintendo cartridges and manipulating> outmoded home electronics. So it's no surprise that their new project,> Microtel, also involves breathing life into dying living room technology--in> this case, the neglected aesthetic of teletext. The system was invented in> England, in the 1970s, to stream text and graphics to analog television sets.> Its vivid cathode colors and signature clunky graphics became the visual> language of up-to-the-minute news bulletins and awkward advertisements before> being replaced by newer text displays. Coming to the medium's rescue,> Lektrolab recently posted an open call for teletext art on their website.> They are compiling the submissions and, beginning January 26th, broadcasting> them on Netherlands public television in conjunction with Rotterdam's 35th> International Film Festival. The Microtel website has images of the> submissions that have co!> me in, thus far, and everything one needs to participate, including the> software to make a teletext masterpiece. - Bill Hanley
